When purchasing a fresh tree:
- Test for freshness by gently bending a needle. It should bend rather than break.
- Drop the stump of the tree on the ground and if green needles drop off in abundance, the tree may not be fresh.
- Pine trees shed their inside needles every year and sometimes dead needles every year. Sometimes dead needles lodge among the branches. This is a normal process and a sign of an old or dry tree.
- A tree stand that holds at least 4 litres of water is recommended.
Caring for your Tree:
- Care for it in the same way you would care for a bunch of flowers.
- They may drink between 1 to 4 litres of water per day, so make sure you check daily and supply fresh water as needed.
- Cut 2cm off the stump of your tree and put it onto a water stand – this opens up the tree trunk to water.
- If you do not wish to put your tree up immediately, store it in a cool place out of wind and sun in a bucket of water
Safety:
- Avoid the use of combustible decorations.
- Check all electric lights and connections. Do not use lights with worn or frayed cords.
- Place the tree away from sunlit windows, television sets and other heat sources as they will dry out your tree prematurely.
- Be sure to unplug tree lights before retiring at night and any time you leave the house.
- Sensible precautions such as these ensure a safe and happy holiday.
