Each year the President of USA lights the National Christmas Tree. A ceremony takes place with music and entertainment. The first National Christmas tree was lit in 1923.
The US National Christmas tree is in the Ellipse near the Whitehouse in Washington DC. This year the tree is new: the old one was blown down by a storm.
Surrounding the tree are 56 smaller trees; one for each state and US territory, and one for the District of Columbia. This area is called the “Pathway of Peace”.
This year the performers were Marsha Ambrosius, Rodney Atkins, Carson Daly, Ellie Goulding , OneRepublic and Kermit the Frog. Here is a video of Kermit singing with Michelle Obama, the president’s wife.
