If you visit our Advent Calendar you will see that behind each image there will now be a new children’s activity each day – Printables and simple games and activities. Today I have made a sheet of gift tags to print out. Yesterday there was a coloring page

Christmas is an exciting time for kids but they often get bored with the preparations us adults have to make: all the shopping, cooking, baking, cleaning, planning, sending out of Christmas cards … I could go on!

I remember Christmases where I would be up until late Christmas Eve, wrapping presents and assembling toys after a long day of cleaning and shopping for last minute items. Can you relate to this? My own lasting memory is putting up a swing and slide set, in the dark late on Christmas Eve when the children were all asleep, only to find that one vital bolt was missing. Thankfully it was only a bolt for the slide so the rest of the equipment was useable on Christmas Day and of course Santa had brought them plenty of goodies too.

Kids can get cranky, tired and weary of the preparations, wanting attention from busy parents. Keeping them occupied with Christmas activities really helps. We go out and visit Christmas light displays and go to Christmas fetes Apart from our outings I try to find activities that keep kids occupied while at home too. They can do Christmas coloring in, wordsearches, simple crossword puzzles, create Christmas collages, make Christmas Cards…. Red playdoh and Christmas cutter shapes would keep my kids amused for hours. We do things together too: decorate the house and tree, baking, watching Christmas movies…

A visit to the Christmas Tree Farm is also a must for us. Going on the wagon ride, visiting Santa, having a sausage sizzle and taking in the atmosphere, surrounded by all the wonderful trees and cute buildings, brings out the Christmas spirit in all of us.

Coming from England, albeit a long time ago now, Christmas in Summer still seems a little strange to me so it takes activities like this to bring out the child in me again. I am sure my older children would prefer I always acted my age but when younger they appreciated this in me. Well this time of year is called the Silly Season after all.

Take a look at our Christmas Links Pages and Advent Calendar and you will find plenty to keep the children amused to help them pass the time happily until the big day arrives.
